Letter to Students

Dear students,

Welcome to Virginia Tech!

As you begin your university studies, strong writing will be key to your success—in class, in internships, and beyond. Strong writing will be one of your most valuable tools in the classroom and throughout your professional career.

This year, we’ll be using Say It Well: Writing for Real-World Communication. We adapted this book to cover  the essentials: support for choosing the right words, structuring ideas, using punctuation effectively, and writing in clear and professional formats.

Use it as a reference and a practice guide. Each chapter offers tools to help you draft, revise, and improve your writing. Whether you’re working on a letter, a memo, or an essay, this book will support your growth.

Our goal is simple: to help you develop your skillset as a confident, effective communicator. We’re excited to see what you’ll accomplish.
